I was amazed at the fact that one man from the 1950s predicted so many things in his day about what the future would look like. He got it spot on with the seashells, face time etc. Yet there are still no parlor rooms, let’s hope that never comes out since already our society is in to many screens like Faber said. This book talks about censorship but it’s way more than that. The details of going outside and seeing it with your own eyes and experiencing life, giving you a chance to look at the world. In the book, the world is dystopian. There is no beautiful future. Just a grey smoky sky where the government changed history and burn books for people not to learn because knowledge is power and they don’t want people to have power.
The characters were interesting in my thoughts. Guy was living a life of lies and he wanted to seek the truth. He has a unloving wife named Mildred who was in love with the screens. But without her “help” he wouldn’t realize how much people have become addicted to technology and how they rely on it for far to many reasons. But at the same time, she ruined him. She never stopped to ask him about what’s going on, she forgot to mention the tragic death of Clarisse to Guy, and worse above all... she turned him in and left him saying no words to him or why she did it. She just left him. Guy also had a boss. A boss who I question in my thoughts. Captain Beatty is the leader of the salamanders, he tells guy lies about books to scare him about them. But for what? Is he trying to help Guy avoid books because he too has thought of reading them or has he already read some books secretly. I always wanted to know more about Beatty. Why did he let Guy kill him? Why did he let guy take those books and not stop him until now? Why did Faber think he would be a good person to convince to join the revolt? What happened to Beatty’s past that made him quote old speeches from the past? Did he read books like Guy and hid them as well? So many question yet so little answers. I was left wondering in my own thoughts whether or not he was good or bad. was he just doing what he was thought to do. Clarisse McClellan was far more interesting than guy but sadly she was gone to quick. Her death was so impactful not only to Guy but to me as well, I thought she was going to be by Guys side every step of the way but nope. Vroom vroom dead. Her 17 year old crazy life was far more different than Guys life. She would do things far more differently from other students. She also told us that the schools in the book has changed. She was “antisocial” and questioned everything but at the same time was extraordinary. She made a great impact to Guy just by telling him one question, she was like a daughter to him. Faber the wise old man from the past to guide Guy and answer his questions about the books and what they hold. They are all unique in their own way.
