In the begging of the book we all get to see the Protaganist's (Guy Montag) life in just a few pages, He is a firemen and he "loves" his job, he "loves" to burn books, the smell of kerosean is perfume to him. He seems to enjoy it, until he arrives home. He meets his new neighbor Clarisse McCellan, a 17 year old crazy girl who is full of curiousity. One question that actually get to Montag is "are you happy?". When Guy thinks about it, he realizes he isn't happy. He feels like he's alone. He has a wife and they have been married for ten years, and her name is Mildred who may or may not be suicidal. She is addicted to her three wall TVs and wants a fourth wall installed. They both don't even remember how they met. Guy even states he wouldn't shed a tear if Mildred died. Guy also seems to be hiding something from his wife, something that could ruin there life. Guy seems to always have conversations with Clarisse and think of her as some type of daughter.
Guy's job as firemen is simple, burn the books to ashes and also the house. His boss officer Beatty, who I think is the antaganist of this book is doing what he is told to do and that is to burn all book. He lies to Montag telling him books are dangerous, and how books are full of lies from the author only to hurt the reader. One work duty takes a dark turn as both Beatty and Guy witness something tragic and both leave them in different reactions to what had just happen.
Further into the strory gets even more tragic but I won't spoil it since even I had my eye's widen by the end of the first chapter.
